I have been trying to work with my staff to allow our kids to show what they know in lots of creative, non-traditional ways. What learning goal do we want our students to meet and how individualized are we willing to be to help coach them towards that goal? No doubt students must learn &amp; grow in their skill of academic writing, synthesis, and flow of structured ideas. But, so too they must be allowed and given the creative freedom to express their ideas in a customized way.<br />As always in this #21stedu world, lots to learn! A big part of their model is the mastery learning dimension. By turning the traditional instructional paradigm upside down (inside out?) and giving the kids tasks to do outside class that they can handle independently, teacher/student contact time becomes devoted to meeting individuals&#39; needs and honing and deepening their understandin -- in short to ensuring they master the skills and content and do not walk away with partial learning. <br /><br />It always bothered me when I taught math that the class time ended when the students began to apply what had been covered that day. I was not there when the students needed me most -- to ask a question or give some feedback which would turn on the light bulb of understanding as they negotiated their way through the assignments. I especially liked the examples of how others are using it. A couple things; I think teachers in a synchronous classroom do not necessarily mimic a brick and mortar school by using lecture- at least not at the high school level- I haven&#39;t seen much of that. Elluminate lets us use many different strategies/methods that would be used in a traditional classroom- and even more that would be difficult in a &#39;real&#39; school. I really like what you said about educating the teachers and students. I believe, like learning anything new, there will be an adjustment period. For Credenda, that might look like a &#39;live&#39; teacher walking the students through how to view a recording (video) to get the most from it. I TOTALLY agree that students cannot rely upon extrinsic motivation or stuff that is reward focused.. it has to come from within...<br /><br />Q: Is it the role of teachers to motivate students?<br />A: You decide?<br /><br />That’s not a cop out… BUT, one teacher once told me “I taught them, they just didn’t learn it”.<br /><br />Where does the learning start and where does it end?<br /><br />If I was a comedian and I told you “I was funny, but , they just didn’t laugh !!”. Is that true?<br /><br />Or the salesman who said “I sold it them, they just didn’t buy it”. Surely the true measurement is in the result of what we said we did.<br /><br />So, going back to the teacher who said, “I taught them, they just didn’t learn”. That doesn’t quite stack up. So, how do you motivate students to learn then?<br /><br />The problem with motivation is that it is an intrinsic part of the learning process. The best teachers get students to learn stuff AND take an interest in it. It&#39;s not just learning for learnings sake...<br /><br />So, what can a teacher do then that promotes this &#39;interest&#39; in what it is that you do?<br /><br />I Have 10 &#39;P&#39;s - Dead simple<br /><br />1. Play – Have fun, enjoy, enthuse and bring energy to the room. “No-one ever achieved anything without enthusiasm” Emerson<br />2. Personal – School is about life. Indulge your students and listen to their stories. Indulge yourself – Share your stories with them… if it benefits them<br />3. Provoke – Ask questions about life; ask questions about the topic – it gets them to think. It’s powerful when they get to see things through their own minds !<br />4. Praise – Catch people doing things right. Be focused on praise BUT be specific and sincere. The praise should be focused on effort and improvement – this is always effective. We all need to feel good enough.<br />5. Power – Let your students determine some of the agenda or make certain rules. This gets them feeling like they’re ‘in charge’ without you losing control.<br />6. Projects – These are very powerful mechanisms for connecting different skills and knowledge and harnessing natural curiosity.<br />7. Positive People – This gets them to learn quickly how to behave in a positive manner.<br />8. Prizes – Rewards can be powerful when they are unannounced and not too familiar. Prizes can be as innocuous or as humorous as you like.<br />9. Prestige – All children need to feel important – some more than others – so prestige and recognition are fundamental. Consistent encouragement and opportunities to showcase talent are important.<br />10. Principled - People like rules but only if they &#39;work&#39;, rules that are broken or made up for the sake of it breakdown the trust. Trust is absolute.<br /><br />That’s it!<br /><br />These techniques are NOT magic as you can see; they’re just ways of keeping people focused when their natural attention wanes. A Cree girl adopted into a farm family, she had her first child in Gr 7 and future looked grim. In the meantime, she has finished her post-secondary education, connected with her Cree family in the north, raised a few more kids of her own, and leads a wonderful life in NB. It was cool that she mentioned the impact of her early teachers.
